FAQ's and Odd Questions:

I receive a lot of questions that cover a VERY wide range of subjects - mostly about fishing,  but some that are either unusual,  or downright bizarre.  I'll list them out when I can...

1) Who was St. Elias? (Mt. St. Elias is the second tallest mountain in the US at 18,008 ft and a prominent feature of the Yakutat skyline.)

Answer:  According to the website www.catholic.org,  "Saint Elias was an Arab who was educated in an Egyptian monastery. He was driven from Egypt by monophysite Bishop Timothy the Cat of Alexandria for his Catholic orthodoxy. He went to Palestine, where he stayed for a time at St Euthymius' laura, founded a monastery at Jericho, and was ordained. In 494 he was elected patriarch of Jerusalem. Although he had accepted Emperor Zeno's Henotikon of 482, which was condemned for its bias in favor of monophysitism, Elias remained loyal to Rome. In 512 the synod of Sidon supported Elias and his colleague, Bishop Flavian of Antioch, and the decrees of the Council of Chalcedon (451), though the synod had been summoned to denounce Chalcedon and to depose the two bishops, who strongly supported Chalcedon. Elias was exiled to Aila on the Red Sea in 513 when he refused to sign Emperor Anastasius I's formula supporting monophysitism and died there."

Why on earth is our mountain named after him?  Not a clue...

Update:  Received the answer from Russ Feilzer,  who sent me this e-mail...

From the Yakutat chamber of commerce page, "Danish explorer Vitus Bering watched the mountain emerge as the mist cleared following days of fog-bound drifting while exploring for the Czar of Russia in 1741. The discovery was made on, and named in honor of a Danish holiday, St. Elias Day. Mount St. Elias rests at the head of Malaspina Glacier, the largest piedmont glacier in North America."

The answer to item #1, why Mt. St. Elias was given that name.

2) Will my cell phone work?

Nope!  They make great sinkers though.  Yakutat has absolutely no cell coverage.

Update:  GCI has been threatening to bring cell phone coverage to Yakutat for years.  In 2011,  they actually set a date for the system to go online for September,  but it has once again been delayed indefinitely.  They were even selling service plans through Cordova Wireless and a lot of locals were gullible enough to plop money down for a service plan that may never appear...  When the technician passed through the shop in the spring,  he said the 4 towers would cover town,  the airport and about 1/4th of the lower Situk.

Not!  We'll keep you posted though.

3) Coming Soon...  as soon as someone asks another question...
