Lodging: This is
a work-in progress page...
Yakutat has a variety of lodging services, from low-end spare cabin rentals to nice service-oriented bed and breakfasts. Apartment rentals that are perfect for large groups - to 50's style motels. Here is a partial list, grouped by their basic service style. I do not "endorse" any particular service provider and I do not get a commission or any benefit from any of them. The intention here is to provide you with impartial info so you can tailor your trip to your needs... Cabin Rentals: Forest Service Cabins - There are 12 Forest Service rental cabins available through www.reserveamerica.com. Do a search for "Yakutat" in the city field and all of them come up. The Middle Situk cabins are listed as "Eagle" and Raven". Access can be via driftboat, or fly in via wheeled air charter. No road access. There is also a cabin on Situk Lake that can be reached via a 4 mile hike, or by float plane. The Square Lake cabin is ONLY accessible via float plane, with some resident rainbows. The Italio River cabin is 3/4 mile from the Middle Italio mouth and has great silver fishing in the fall. Access is only by wheeled charter flight. Those are pretty much the only Forest Service cabins near fish. At this time, there are no commercial float plane charter operators in Yakutat. Park Service Cabins - The Park Service has two rental cabins in Yakutat. The East Alsek River cabin is well upstream on the East River inside Glacier Bay, with a LOT of bear activity around the sockeye spawning redds. The best fishing in the East is significantly farther downstream, but there are trails and roads to get around. Access is only via air charter. On the west side of Yakutat Bay, Esker Creek has a Park cabin. Esker has a significant silver run in the fall. Access to this Wrangell-St Elias Park is primarily via wheeled air charter on the beach, but can be accessed via the water as well for kayakers by crossing the bay. Book these by calling the local Ranger office at (907)784-3295. Situk River Lodge - Pretty spare cabins down at the lower landing. There is a small privately owned plot of land next to the Lower Situk Landing you can rent from Dan Adams. No web site that I can find, but his local number is (907)784-3229. Apartment Rentals with Full Kitchens: Kingfisher Cove - John and Fran Latham offer a variety of services. Kingfisher is a stand-alone vacation apartment rental right on the waterfront. Gorgeous view with fully furnished apartments to rent by the week. Go to www.johnlatham.com and select "Vacation Rentals" from the menu. Leonard's Landing - Location, location, location... Leonard's is right on the bay with its own private dock. They have a variety of room options from duplexes, whole houses and more traditional hotel-style rooms. Leonard's will rent driftboats that include a shuttle service to and from the river, ocean-going skiffs, or sea kayaks and they will commercially process your catch - even if you aren't staying with them! They also have a really nice gift shop. Take a look at their web site at www.leonardslanding.com. Yakutat Dream Catcher Lodge - Ron DeHardi has a great house back behind the Glacier Bear that can accommodate up to 8 people at a time. Ron also driftboat guides on the Situk throughout the season. His web site is www.yakutatdreamcatcher.com. Yakutat's Situk Inn - Situk Inn has two buildings for rent. Both are completely self-contained rentals with full kitchens, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, plus mud rooms and separate decks. The larger one has 5 bedrroms and can sleep up to 10 people. The smaller unit has two bedrooms and can comfortably accommodate up to 6. They don't have a web site yet, but you can call Rube Evans at (907)784-3934. They also have two large vans available. The Mooring - The Mooring Lodge is located in town right next to the AC grocery store. The rooms are conventional "condo-like" kitchenette apartments. Leo and Tracy also run "Leo's Vehicles" rental, so you can kill two birds with one stone. They also have a couple drift boats available for rent. Visit www.mooringlodge.com for more info. Bed & Breakfasts: Blue Heron Inn - John and Fran Latham offer a variety of services. The Blue Heron Inn is their Bed and Breakfast right on the waterfront. Gorgeous view with Yakutat's nicest place to stay (in my opinion). John guides on the Situk as well as big game and waterfowl. He has a couple remote camps including a fly-in camp on the Akwe River about 30 miles outside of town. Go to www.johnlatham.com and select "Bed & Breakfast" from the menu. Full-Service Lodges (with restaurant and bar): Glacier Bear Lodge - Located half-way between the airport and town, the Glacier Bear has a full-service restaurant and bar. All rooms are your standard older motel with a full bath in each. They have one deep-sea charter boat, driftboat guides and they also rent unguided driftboats throughout the season. Their web site is www.glacierbearlodge.com. Yakutat Lodge - The Yakutat Lodge is located right next to the Alaska Airlines terminal at the Yakutat airport. They have also been building some nice new cabins to rent on the waterfront with their own dock. Some rooms have private bathrooms, some have communal bathrooms, some are EXTREMELY rustic cabins. Make sure you know what room you'll be staying in before you come, so you don't end up surprised. They have Yakutat's second restaurant, third bar plus a small gift shop. They have Yakutat's largest deep-sea charterboat fleet, the most guide use on the Situk and have their own plane for fly-out fishing trips later in the fall. The Yakutat Lodge also rents vehicles, driftboats and even a couple sea kayaks. This would be the only true "full-service" lodge offering everything... Their web site is www.yakutatlodge.com. Remote Fly-in Destination Lodges and Camps: Icy Bay Lodge - Icy Bay Lodge is located 65 miles northeast of Yakutat on the edge of remote Icy Bay. There are no other lodges anywhere around, giving you an incredible isolated wilderness experience. They have both saltwater and stream fishing at their doorstep, along with some of the world's most spectacular scenery - Alaska's largest glaciers sliding down from the flanks of Alaska's tallest mountains! Check out their web site at www.icybaylodge.com. Italio River Adventures - The only full-service outfitter on Yakutat's top fly-out river, Italio River Adventures has a remote camp surrounded by five fishable streams. Their web site is www.italio.com.
