2008 Photo Contest:
As you can see from the lack of photos on our site, I need photos. I have a lot of them from the Italio and around Yakutat from the past 30 years of living here, but darned few of them from the Situk. So... what better way to acquire good photos than to hold the first annual Situk River Fly Shop PHOTO CONTEST!
I have yet to write up the "official
rules", but in the meantime, here is what I'll be looking
for:
***** Good photos showing a variety of aspects in and around Yakutat - not
just the Situk, or even fishing - but all good photos. We'll
have several categories including SCENIC, WILDLIFE,
FISHING... and what ever else I come up with.
***** Prizes are yet to be determined, but they will undoubtedly include a Sage fly rod and other cool fly shop stuff.
***** Uses for the photos will
include, but not be limited to the following:
- Prints to decorate the walls of the shop
- Decorating the three web sites of situk.com, net and org
- Inclusion in the shop's exclusive wall calendar
- Inclusion in a coffee table style book about Yakutat and the Situk
(probably will take a few years of photo contests to get enough winning
images to publish a book)
- Inclusion in other future publications for the shop (like a salmon cook
book, possibly post cards, marketing materials, etc.)
***** All the details will be clearly spelled out when I type up the "official rules". Since I am a published photographer myself, I don't like the idea of my own photos being used without my knowledge and consent, just as you probably wouldn't. So, be assured that beyond the clearly spelled out uses I'll type up, I won't use any submitted photo for anything without first contacting (or at least making a good faith effort to contact) the photographer.
***** Timeline: I hope to be ready with the rules and prize list sometime in June. If you would like to get a jump start on the process and send me something now, you are welcome to. I need photos PERIOD for the web site, so if you would like to send something in, feel free to do so and I will include them in the photo contest. We'll take 2008 photo contest photos through till December 31st, then narrow the list of finalists to around 50 photos. I may try to involve the Yakutat High School art classes in helping to get to the finalist list, then I'll post those images on a web site page for all of you to cast your top 13 vote in January and February - to give us all something to do and dream about while waiting for the spring steelhead to return! My goal will be to have an 18 month calendar ready by April 1st, 2009...

They need to be as high resolution as possible for future use. Don't be afraid to send big images, but try to submit them on individual e-mails. I do have a limit of 10MB for each message. Once the contest starts in earnest, or you have a LOT of big images you want to send, you may want to snail mail a disc to me at the P.O. Box address listed below.
